The Importance of Positive Input
You don’t have to look far to find negative thinking, negative news…just negative junk. Those are all over the internet, radio, tv, movies, and social media. You can even find them in your email box.
Negative thinking is promoted by politicians, the news media, and even businesses. Why? Because there’s a certain unhealthy fascination connected with negative thoughts. Sometimes negative thinking can provide excuses to not do things that are important to do. Sometimes a negative post or story from someone can result in a feeling of superiority or gratitude. “Well, my life is all screwed up, but I’m in pretty good shape compared to them.” And sometimes it just might be tempting to wallow in self-pity for a while.
Positive thinking, when you can find it, is a refreshing respite from all the negative, and it can be found if you’re looking for it! Positive thinking promotes creativity, productivity and prosperity. When other people tell you that you have greatness in you and that you can be successful at anything to which you put your mind, it fosters feelings of hopefulness and possibility.
One of the most common sources of negativity can be your own habitual thinking, if you allow it. Usually, this type of negativity comes in the form of “What If” thoughts. What if I fail? What if they don’t like me (or my product or service)? What if they get mad at me? What if I offend them? What if they say NO?
A good friend and coach of mine taught me to change negative what ifs into positive ones. The moment you hear a negative what if in your mind, change it to a positive one. What if I succeed grandly? What if they love me (or my product or service)? What if they go tell all their friends how awesome I am? What if they say YES?
Then, when you’ve changed to the positive what if in your mind, write it down and speak it out loud to yourself.
